An unmissable exhibition for 80’s fans

Experience Barnsley’s latest exhibition ‘I Grew Up in the 80’s’ celebrates one of the most memorable decades of music, movies and interesting fashion choices.

Opening in the Gallery’s temporary exhibition space on Wednesday, 28 October it will be a

fun way to travel back in time and give an entire generation a chance to wallow in 80s nostalgia with over 200 iconic objects that defined the decade.

Now more than ever people need something heart-warming that will put a smile of their face and this exhibition will certainly do that. Visitors will be transported through the cultural landscape of 1980s Britain, revisiting the vibrancy, quirkiness and innovation that symbolised the 80s. From Betamax to the Raleigh Burner BMX, the Rubik’s Cube™ to the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, the Thompson Twins to Transformers!

This carefully curated time capsule of treasures showcases the youthful exuberance of this much-loved time. A wide array of wonderfully preserved objects encompasses toys, home technology, sport, fashion, food, film, books, TV and much, much more.

There will be limited spaces in the exhibition area and strict social distancing in place. Visitors will be asked to wear masks when inside the museum to ensure it is a safe space for everyone to enjoy.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “The latest exhibition at Experience Barnsley will be a breath of fresh air as it takes a light-hearted look at the decade that brought us the very best in pop culture. To many it will bring back lots of happy memories and younger audiences will be amazed at how times have changed. As well the exhibition itself, there will be a great digital offer that will allow people to experience the displays and objects from the comfort of their own home.”
