VOLUNTEERS HELP TO CONSERVE BARNSLEY CO-OPERATIVE ARCHIVES

Volunteers at Barnsley Museums and Archives have been helping to conserve historic Barnsley Co-op archives at a special workshop. This conservation is part of the project Service Please! which has enabled Barnsley Museums to research and catalogue the Barnsley British Co-operative Society archives, with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. Volunteers will be taught techniques to help stabilize the condition of the original documents, to preserve them for the future and allow them to be used by researchers for the first time. Paul Stebbing, Archives Manager, said: “We are delighted to be running this workshop for our many volunteers which will enhance their skills, whilst they help to ensure the survival of these important archives for future generations.” Many of the newly conserved items will be in the exhibition ‘Service Please!’ from 6 July to 27 September, which will explore the history of the Barnsley Co-operative.
