Stories of the Somme

As part of a public art project to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, Barnsley Museums would like to see photographs of those brave men who fell on the 1 July 1916. The installation, which will be created by artists Musson and Retallick and local school children, will remember the heroic men who risked their lives fighting for King and Country.

Guided walks planned to tell the story of the Oaks Colliery Disaster

The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP), supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), is delivering a series of free guided walks around important locations related to the 1866 Oaks Colliery Disaster. 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the disaster at Hoyle Mill, Barnsley, the worst mining disaster in English history. The DVLP is co-ordinating commemorative events for the disaster and has worked with a team of volunteers to reveal the death toll for the disaster was higher than previously thought.

Barnsley Museums wins support from Heritage Lottery Fund for Barnsley Sound and Film project

Barnsley Arts, Museums and Archives Service have received £51,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting new project, ‘The Joy of Sound and Vision: uncovering over one hundred years of Barnsley’s memories’. Thanks to National Lottery players the project will make the sound and film collections held by Barnsley Archives and Local Studies fully accessible for the first time. These collections, many of which were donated during the creation of the Experience Barnsley Museum between 2010 and 2013, will be converted, catalogued, interpreted and shared with the public, community groups, schools and new audiences.

People can’t wait for this year’s Mayors Parade

People are more excited than ever before, about this year’s Mayors Parade, which has a ‘Best of Barnsley’ theme. Entries are coming in thick and fast from organisations around the borough including, Sandpit Nursery. Staff and children there are busy working on their parade entry, which will be unveiled at the fun family event on Saturday, 9 July.

Vikings have landed in Barnsley

Viking warriors will be taking over the town’s award winning museum this Saturday. To celebrate Experience Barnsley’s latest exhibition, Heroes: Viking kings, conquerors and explorers, a band of Nordic idols will be roaming the galleries. Here they will be telling tales of their fierce battles and disclosing fascinating secrets about their eventful lives. People are invited to come to the free family fun day where there will be lots of activities taking place as well as storytelling, crafts and an authentic Viking longboat.
