‘Routed’, a new exhibition celebrating the town’s people and their stories opens at Experience Barnsley on Saturday, 23 October

The exhibition sees vibrant memories of Barnsley Town Centre explored through writing, illustration, objects, poetry, photography, music and a series of carved wooden sculptural pieces. It comes at an exciting time for the town as huge transformations take place with the opening of the new Glassworks shopping centre.

‘Routed’ is a Barnsley based heritage project delivered by Lenny and Whale in partnership with Barnsley Museums and Heritage Trust and funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Alongside the exhibition will be an interactive public art trail which will launch in November 2021.

Lenny and Whale, artists said: “Barnsley and its people have such a fascinating history with really wonderful stories to tell. We are pleased that so many people have shared their memories with us, and we want ‘Routed’ to showcase them in an exciting way that captures the spirit of the town.”

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “Barnsley is well known for the warmth, friendliness and character of its people, and to have an exhibition dedicated to their memories and stories is incredible. To capture the town during such a critical moment in history, during the pandemic and while its undergoing such a huge transformation is important so we can share this history with future generations.  Now more than ever, it’s important to celebrate our wonderful borough, our residents and the fantastic things we have to offer.”
