Experience Museum and Archive is based right at the heart of Barnsley in our stunning Town Hall. It tells the story of Barnsley and its people and offers everyone the chance to discover their own past.

Volunteering in the museum is all about the visitor’s experience, as a volunteer you would be on hand to offer a friendly welcome, guide people and answer questions about current and permanent exhibitions. In the archive, you can get hands on with research on a variety of projects.

Volunteering at Experience Barnsley Museum

Experience Barnsley is an excellent opportunity for anyone who loves local heritage and history, working with people or both. Customer service is useful but would also be developed so not a barrier if you haven’t done this before.
You will be supported by the friendly staff team and get to see a changing exhibition programme.

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Experience Barnsley. I have met some very nice colleagues
and interacted with some interesting visitors. I have also learnt a lot about Barnsley.’

Archives

Archive volunteers support research, transcribing and help the staff team to uncover important documents for use in projects. Some recent examples of this include uncovering stories from Cannon Hall gardens for use in interpretation and supporting ‘All Manner of Wickedness’, which looked at the rich history of Barnsley’s non-conformist churches.

Meeting new people who I can call friends. Seeing behind the scenes and 'how it works'.
